Ebony & Krysta Jumped the Gun and Jumped the Broom

Ebony and Krysta are two women in love and in life together.

Ebony and Krysta are two women in love and in life together.

BL3: Who proposed and what was it like?

Krysta: I proposed. It was quite unexpected, I think for both, because we had resolved we would just be a couple. I had previously been in a 14-year relationship and hadn’t made a commitment to get married and so we were fine with simply living together.

One night, after being out shopping all day and having a long conversation, it was just the two of us. We were lying in bed and out of the blue… Krysta is asking Ebony to be her wife… Ebony’s response was, “Are you serious?” (in a voice of pure disbelief).

Ebony: Krysta proposed to me on Saturday, August 23, 2014. We were in Boca Raton, Fla., for the weekend. That Saturday was a great day. We went shopping, sightseeing and later that evening, we went to a bar. On the way back to the hotel, we grabbed something to eat so we could just relax the rest of the evening. I prepared the food and wine, while Krys turned on music and lit a candle. We sat down and talked while we ate. During that conversation, we talked about our relationship and our future. These were things that we talk about so to me I was not thinking anything of it. Once we finished eating, we decided to lie in bed. The music was still playing, we continued our conversation. She then asked me if I would marry her. I kept asking her if she was serious. She laughed and said, yes she is serious. I replied and said, “I would want nothing more than to marry you.” Then she placed the ring on my finger while I cried, hugged and kissed her.

BL3. How does your families feel about your relationship?

Krysta: My family loves Ebony. Ebony is a part of my family. I am an out lesbian for about 20 years. They love me, so naturally they really love her!! Ebony’s family is really having a hard time dealing with and understanding how she could be “straight” all her life and end up in a relationship with a woman and now ultimately marrying a woman. They are going through the process that most families do and it’s a difficult time for Ebony.

Ebony: Krysta’s family is very loving and supportive of us. My family on the other hand, is not supportive. This has probably been the hardest thing we have had to deal with in our relationship.

BL3: Why did you believe it was important to get married?

Krysta: Initially, it was important for me to understand who I was in love with. Ebony was born and raised to be someone’s wife and I felt it was important to be able to give her that. Then in introspect, honestly it was important for me to make the declaration that SHE is my beginning and the end. I wanted to secure our lives forever. She is more than a girlfriend; she is my everything. Marriage says that best for me.

Ebony: For me, there is no one else I can honestly see spending the rest of my life with. Krysta is truly my best friend, my lover, confidant, cheerleader, motivator and my mirror who will tell me the truth, no matter what it is. Being with her has shown me what a relationship, partnership and marriage truly should be. Everything that I have wanted and prayed for in a partner is in her. She is truly the woman of my dreams and I am blessed that she loves me.
