Amena was pretty much done looking for love when Nikki came, unexpectedly, into her life in September 2012. Two years after their first meeting, this Maryland couple is happily planning their fall 2015 wedding. Amena, a university LGBT program coordinator, and Nikki, an art teacher and artist, have agreed to let Black Lesbian Love Lab tag along over the next year as they plan their wedding.
“When I got engaged, I’ve never been so sure about anything. It sounds crazy even for me to say that,” Amena said.
“Buying the ring was instinctive,” agreed Nikki. “It was like I was supposed to do it.”
For this fabulous duo, it was all a matter of perfect timing. “This was like it was supposed to happen and it wasn’t supposed to happen before this,” Amena said. “When we first met, we know a lot of the same people, there have to have been times when we were in the same place at the same time and never met. … The universe was like, ‘You ain’t ready. Finally in September in 2012 we were finally ready.”
